Fire Safety Officer York General NHS Hospital

I served for 31 years in the Royal Air Force as a fire-fighter in the Fire & Rescue Service(1976 – 2007 having attained the rank of Flight Sergeant. Since leaving the RAF I have been employed with the NHS as a Fire Safety Advisor. Serving in that role for the last 6 years, at York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in North Yorkshire. My responsibilities are wide ranging, from staff training (close to 8,000 personnel), to carrying out the fire risk assessments and reviews for the Trust estate and advising on new build projects.

I have been a member of the British Fire Services Association since the latter part of my military career (approx 10 years+) primarily as the secretary of the East Midlands branch. At present I am serving in the role of deputy chairman on the Governing Council. I am a full member of the Institute of Fire Prevention Officers and the Institute of Fire Safety Managers; I am also a Graduate Member of the Institute of Fire Engineers.

Richard William Lovelace

Director & Vice President

When I left school in 1961 I started work in the paper trade as an office worker. The mill I worked in had an industrial fire brigade with several full-time firemen and many more part-timers. The role was to support during working hours all fire related incidents. I became a part-timer in 1962. I remained in this position, working in an office and sales position moving three times to different companies until 1982 but continued membership throughout. In 1983 I formed, with a partner, our own business as paper merchants but I continued to train and compete with my previous company several times a week.

This way I was able to maintain membership. After a very successful 25 years in business I retired
